Leader Wellbeing

A key component of developing leadership potential (alongside the priority of living a fulfilled life) is the importance of personal wellbeing.  When we think about how we live and the lifestyle choices that we make, we can identify 5 integrated areas that if managed effectively, (through good choices and improved self-control) will have significant benefits for both cognitive and physical wellbeing.

The consequence of building positive habits and making good choices within each of these 5 areas, means that we are empowered to expand our leadership potential, while sustaining consistent levels of high-performance.

A short overview of each is outlined in the video, with a free resource - Bespoke Leadership Wellbeing Action Plan below…

THE FAB 5 OF WELLBEING

  1. Physical Activity – This doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon or compete in an ironman. It means you have to move your body in the way that it was designed. Regular moderate to high intensity exercise is great, though more important is the decision to be active in the way you live your daily life, through moving more.

  2. Social Interaction – This doesn’t mean you have to have 1000 of friends and followers on Facebook or Instagram. It means remaining connected to the people that you value and enjoy spending time with. Having consistent social interactions with those people to engage and satisfy our deep human need for belonging.

  3. Mental Stimulation – This doesn’t mean you have to do an MBA or increase your formal qualifications. It means finding activities that you enjoy and that challenge or stimulate you mentally. If you like reading then make time to invest in a novel or autobiography, if you like to do puzzles find time to do a crossword or a Sudoku.

  4. Diet – This doesn’t mean you have to go Paleo, cut out sugar or become a Vegan. It means making positive choices in the way you eat and nourish your body and mind. It means thinking carefully to consider what you eat, knowing that this has a significant impact on how you feel and the way you operate.

  5. Sleep & Rest – This doesn’t mean sleeping all day long or only sleeping for 4 hours every night. It means making sure you are giving your body and mind the adequate rest it needs to perform optimally. This means striving to create the right environment and conditions for quality sleep, rest and recovery.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How would you currently rate yourself against each of the leadership wellbeing elements? On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate yourself? What action can you take to move closer to a 10/10 rating for each element?
